Flooring quotes vary enormously by material tier, and the price-per-square-foot number alone doesn't tell you much without knowing what's underneath it.
What drives the real cost
- Material tier — laminate, luxury vinyl plank, engineered hardwood, and solid hardwood each occupy a very different price range, and a quote should name which one you're getting.
- Subfloor prep — leveling or repairing the subfloor is often the difference between a floor that lasts and one that doesn't, and it's commonly left off a quote until it becomes a change order mid-job.
- Removal and disposal of the old flooring, included or billed separately.
- Moisture barrier, especially for below-grade installs like basements.
- Acclimation time for solid hardwood — the material needs to sit in the home for days before installation, and a rushed job that skips this step often leads to warping later.
If a quote seems unusually low, check whether subfloor prep and disposal are actually included, or waiting as an add-on.
