HVAC quotes are dense with numbers that sound official but don't always mean what they imply. Here's what actually matters when you're comparing one estimate to another.
Sizing matters more than the brand
A furnace or AC unit that's too big for your home short-cycles, wastes energy, and wears out faster — bigger isn't better. A proper quote should reflect an actual load calculation for your home's size and insulation, not just a swap of whatever size was there before. If a quote doesn't mention how they sized the equipment, that's worth asking about directly.
What should be spelled out by name
- Specific model numbers for the furnace and condenser, not just tonnage or BTU ranges.
- SEER rating for cooling efficiency — higher costs more upfront but saves on utility bills over time.
- Whether the line set is being replaced or reused.
- Thermostat included or separate.
- Permit fees, if your area requires one for HVAC replacement.
- Haul-away of the old equipment.
- Parts warranty length versus labor warranty length — these are often different, and only one of them is usually mentioned upfront.
A note on financing offers
"0% financing" offers are common and not inherently bad, but they sometimes coincide with a higher sticker price than a cash-pay quote from the same company. It's worth asking what the cash price would be before assuming the financed price is the real one.
