Window replacement is one of the most sales-tactic-heavy categories in home services — dramatic "was/now" pricing, one-day-only discounts, and high-pressure in-home presentations are all common. None of that tells you whether the product or the price is actually good.
What actually determines quality and price
- Frame material and manufacturer, named specifically — vinyl, fiberglass, and wood-clad windows have real cost and durability differences.
- Energy ratings — U-factor and SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) — should be listed, not just "energy efficient."
- Full-frame versus insert (pocket) replacement — insert replacement is cheaper and faster but keeps the old frame in place; full-frame replaces everything and typically lasts longer.
- Installation warranty, separate from the manufacturer's product warranty — a great product with poor installation still fails.
A note on the sales pressure
A legitimate company's price shouldn't meaningfully change based on whether you sign today or next week. If a quote comes with an expiring "today only" discount, that's worth treating as a sales tactic, not a real deadline — get a second quote before deciding.
